Australian skilled migration (GSM)

Australia selects skilled workers through the General Skilled Migration (GSM) program under a points system: age, English proficiency, education, experience and an occupation on the skilled list. Your occupation must be on the relevant list (for example the MLTSSL) and usually requires a skills assessment.

The main categories are: Subclass 189 (independent, no sponsorship required), 190 and 491 (state/territory nominated), and ENS 186 (employer sponsored). M2W helps you position your occupation, estimate your points and choose the most viable category.

Try the points calculator below, or submit your case for a free assessment.

Frequently asked questions about migration to Australia

How many points do I need for skilled migration to Australia?

A minimum of 65 points is required to be invited to apply under the 189/190 categories, but the actual invitation scores each round are usually higher depending on the occupation. Use the points calculator above to estimate.

Does my occupation qualify for skilled migration to Australia?

The occupation must be on the relevant skills list (e.g. MLTSSL for the 189 category) and usually requires a skills assessment by a specialist assessing authority. An M2W advisor will check your occupation.

How does 189 differ from 190 and 491?

189 is an independent category with no sponsorship needed; 190 requires state nomination (with immediate PR); 491 is a 5-year regional provisional category with a pathway to PR. Each category has different conditions and bonus points.

I heard the 188 investor category has closed?

Correct. Business Innovation 188 stopped accepting new applications from 31/7/2024; the investment category now follows the National Innovation visa (Subclass 858). Ask an advisor if you are interested in this pathway.

Approximately how much does immigrating to Australia cost?

See the cost structure on the Pricing page or use the estimation tool; an advisor will provide specific figures after reviewing your profile.
